Selling Apps

You can charge for the apps you publish to the Marketplace, either once or monthly. Buyers pay your business through Autessa Payments, you keep 80% of the price, and your earnings arrive with your other Payments payouts.

What it's for

If you've built something other companies want, selling it in the Marketplace lets you earn from it without running your own billing. Autessa handles checkout, receipts, failed-payment retries, and pausing the app when a subscription ends, and your buyers receive every update you publish.

  • Setting a price happens in the publish dialog, on the Price step. See Publishing.
  • Your sales live under Marketplace → Apps you sell.
  • Your money lives in Payments → Balance and payouts. See Payouts.

Key concepts

  • Autessa Payments comes first. To sell an app, your company needs a verified Autessa Payments account that can take payments. Until it can, the Price step only offers Free and links you to Payments to finish setup. See Set Up Autessa Payments.
  • Pricing. Choose Free, One-time (buyers pay once and keep using the app), or Monthly (buyers subscribe and pay every month until they cancel).
  • The Marketplace fee. Autessa keeps 20% of each Marketplace sale. You receive 80% of the price before sales tax, and card processing fees are then taken out as for any payment. For example, a $50/mo app pays you $40 each month, less card processing. You never pay the Marketplace fee on sales tax.
  • Buyers are your customers. Each buying company appears as a customer in your Payments, and monthly purchases appear under Subscriptions. Receipts and billing emails go out in your business's name.
  • Price changes. Changing an app's price applies to new purchases only. Existing buyers keep the price they bought at, and existing subscriptions keep renewing at their original price.
  • Review. Apps for Everyone are reviewed by Autessa before they're listed, and the reviewer sees your price. Apps for your clients, if you're an official Autessa Partner, publish immediately with no review. See Partner Apps.
  • Updates are included. Buyers with an active license can install every new version you publish. See Updating Installed Apps.
  • Your app stays yours. Companies that install a paid app can use and edit what they installed, but they can't export it into a bundle or publish it to the Marketplace themselves.

How to sell an app

  1. Finish Autessa Payments setup so your account can take payments.
  2. Publish the app as usual (see Publishing). On the Who can install step, pick Everyone — or My clients if you're an official partner.
  3. On the Price step, choose One-time or Monthly and enter the price.
  4. Submit. Apps for everyone wait for Autessa review; apps for your clients go live straight away.

To change the price later, edit the listing and save a new price. It applies from the next purchase.

How to see your sales

Open Marketplace → Apps you sell. For each app you sell it shows:

  • active subscribers or buyers, and total licenses sold,
  • what buyers paid, the Marketplace fee, and what you received,
  • totals across all your apps.

Click an app to see each buying company, its status (Active, Payment overdue, License expired, or Canceled), when it bought, and when its current month ends.

How to give a company free access

You can give a specific company a free license — for a pilot, a partner, or a support case.

  1. Open Marketplace → Apps you sell and click the app.
  2. Click Give a free license and choose the company.
  3. The company can now install the app and its updates without paying. To take it back, open the license and revoke it.

How you get paid

Marketplace sales go into your Autessa Payments balance like any other payment and are paid out to your bank on your usual payout schedule. There's nothing separate to set up. Every sale, with its Marketplace fee, is listed under Payments → Transactions.

If a buyer's monthly payment fails, Autessa retries it and emails the buyer for you. If every retry fails, their subscription ends and the app pauses in their company until they renew. See Buying Apps.
