Tool Types

Every tool on Autessa is an instance of a tool type: the type determines what the tool does when it executes and which configuration fields it takes. This section is the complete catalog — 309 types across 32 family pages — with the exact configuration reference for each type.

How tool types work

A tool is a name, a description, a type, and that type's configuration. The name and description are what an agent's model reads to decide when to call the tool; the type and config are what the platform executes when it does. The same type can back any number of tools — three API_CALL tools with three different URLs are three different capabilities to an agent.

Config fields vs. arguments

Config fields are saved on the tool and are the same on every execution. Anything dynamic — an order ID, a message body, a search query — is supplied at call time through the tool's arguments, and lands in the config via @@{ARG_NAME} placeholders that are substituted at execution time. The example configs throughout this section use exactly that pattern: literal values for fixed choices, @@{...} placeholders for the values an agent passes on each call. See the Tools guide for defining arguments (including private arguments for sensitive input).

Environment variables

The same @@{...} syntax also resolves environment variables — company-wide named values like API keys, base URLs, and IDs that are injected into every agent and tool execution. Use them to keep secrets and shared constants out of saved configs: a header value of Bearer @@{MY_API_KEY} reads the current key at execution time.

A couple of variables are built in and always available with no setup: @@{currentDate} (the current UTC date, e.g. January 8, 2026) and @@{currentTime} (the current UTC time, e.g. 2:30 PM) — useful for date-stamping prompts and outputs. Your own variables take precedence on a name clash. See built-in variables.

Connector-backed types

Most types (274 of the 309) execute against a connector — a linked external account such as Gmail, QuickBooks, or Notion. These configs have a connectorId field that takes the ID of the connector to act through. Tools never hold credentials: the connector owns the OAuth tokens, the platform refreshes them, and swapping the connectorId repoints the same tool at a different account.

System-only types

A small number of types are provisioned by platform features rather than created by hand — currently the Meeting Recorder notify type. Their entries carry a system-only note: you cannot create or reconfigure tools of these types yourself, but the provisioned tools are visible in your tools list and can be invoked from triggers and scripts like any other.

Attaching tools to agents

Tools become capabilities when you attach them to an agent under Associated Tools (MCP agents skip this — their tools sync from the server). The model chooses among the attached tools by their names, descriptions, and argument descriptions, so those matter as much as the config. Tools are reusable: one tool can serve several agents, an AutessaDB trigger, a scheduled event, and direct API calls at once.

Testing a tool

Every tool can be run standalone from the tool editor's Execute Tool button — with one input per argument — either as a plain request/response or with streaming status updates for longer-running types. The same execution is available programmatically through the Tools Poweruser API.

Reading these pages

Each family page has one section per type: prose on what the type does and when an agent should have it, an example config, and a "Configuration fields" table generated straight from the platform source — so the field lists are always exhaustive and current. IDs in examples are always realistic opaque strings (e.g. V1StGXR8Z5).
